Hello fellas, I have been using Jio AirFiber since last 3–4 weeks, and here are my impression and experience with the service offered by Jio telecommunication company. TL;DR, it is very good for me with a scope of little improvements.
I already have multiple high speed fiber connection at home for home-office work, but I like to visit my hometown often, which is located in northern side of India, there I have to rely on mobile data which is inconsistent and very tough to work on between the calls, as I have to hold the mobile always where I keep it for maximum speeds.
In last many years, I had tried all solutions like JioFi, Airtel’s MiFi (discontinued now), and many expensive 3rd party stuff. Furthermore, I planned for fiber optical connection also, but due to distance it failed for me.
Finally, Jio AirFiber launched and when I get notification on my mobile, I immediately applied for it. It took some time (4-5 days), after registration from my nearest shop, technician installed it at my home within an hour which is too fast, I guess.
The setup and installation was quick and as I have a decent roof (technician said).
When I did network speed test it was giving me promised speed which is 30 Mb/s.
Booking Experience:
When I made a request on Jio’s website, I received an SMS about the nearest available technician who suggested me to book for installation (who charged me ₹1,000 as the registration amount). Since Jio’s nearest retail store was 17 KM from my house, they called me there to shorten the installation time. Otherwise, he has to travel twice or thrice. So I visited there, and did all KYC stuff and completed the registration process.
Installation:
Same day, during the evening time, I got an SMS saying that the installation has been scheduled for the next day at 3:00PM. The next day, I got a call from the installation guys at 11:00 AM itself about installation confirmation.
Technician arrived at around 01:30 AM. The installation took around less than an hour, as my roof has a pole rod for the flag, and he installed the outdoor unit on that pole. He told me that since it is a three-story house, my network coverage will be best compared to most of us around my locality.
Here are the images of Jio AirFiber’s Outdoor CPE (Customer Premises Equipment).
Here is the image of Jio AirFiber’s Wi-Fi 6 router and PoE injector behind.
After the successful activation, he configured the set-up box. Overall, installation was fast, I thought it will take more than a couple of hours, but I told him to not drill down the wall as my room has dedicated section for setting up the routers and cables which saved a lot of time for both of us. Outdoor pole was readily available too, so more time saved.
He used Cat5E cable in the installation, which is rated to support maximum 1 Gbps speed. The router is capable of delivering over 1 Gbps speeds (1.2 Gbps/1200 Mbps) over Wi-Fi, but for that computer and mobile device must support Wi-Fi 6 standards too.
Plans:
I subscribed for ₹599+GST [30 Mbps Plan] for three months. I was actually opting for 100 Mbps plan, but the technician suggested me to go with 30 Mbps plan as speeds may not be available all the time for the higher plan, so I opted for it.
It costed me around ₹1000 registration and installation fee + ₹2200 for 30 Mbps plan for 3 months + ₹120 for extra cable I demanded for my NAS drive to Jio’s router and Home server to Jio’s router. So, a total of, ₹3320 including all expenses.
I will surely opt for higher plan for one month to test down it and update this page.
Uptime and Downtime:
While writing the article about my experience, I didn’t face any downtime. Speeds were consistent even during rain, storm, and even windy time.
Some Random Issues:
I experienced some slowdown in speeds (like 10-20% not much) during peak hours like around 1-3 PM as many banks and shops around me use the service of Jio AirFiber, but there was no downtime at all, even during long power cuts.
Update (4th November 2024): My house is surrounded by lots of trees and due to natures effect one squirrel just chewed the Cat5E cable. Fortunately, the internet connectivity is still on. Will replace the whole wire with Shielded Cat5E/Cat6.
My Opinion:
Jio AirFiber is a great solution for those who need an internet solution at remote locations, but I will recommend getting it when you have robust 5G coverage near you, which you can confirm with Jio’s connection and 5G mobile.
