Web hosting explained – Shared, Virtual Private, and Dedicated servers

In today’s digital world, web servers are essential for businesses to operate online.

What are servers?

Web servers are computers that store and manage websites, allowing users to access them from anywhere in the world. They provide an efficient way for businesses to host their websites and ensure that they are secure and accessible 24/7.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting service is a kind of internet hosting service that allows individuals or business organizations to host their apps, websites, and resources for world wide web access.

By 2020, almost every business is looking to make their business online in order to take full advantage of increasing internet users. Based on the different requirements everyone need different kind of servers. Let’s see different kind of web servers.

Different types of web hosting servers.

Web servers come in a variety of types, including, shared, virtual private, and dedicated server. There are modern type of hosting as well like: cloud hosting, RAM optimized hosting, CPU optimized hosting, GPU optimized hosting, and content delivery networks.

Servers

Each type of web server has its own advantages depending on the size and scope of the website or application. Understanding how each type works can help you determine which one is best suited for your needs. Let’s see each of them in detail.

1. Shared servers.

Shared hosting servers are a great way to host websites and applications, as they offer a cost-effective solution for businesses of all sizes. They provide scalability, reliability, and security while still allowing multiple users to access the same server.

This means that you can get the most out of your online presence without having to invest in expensive hardware or software. Shared hosting servers provide an ideal platform for businesses looking to grow their online presence without breaking their budget.

You can start in just few minutes after signing up with a hosting service.

You’ll be offered a cPanel or Control Panel login where you can manage you hosting account.

Shared servers are made by either sharing Dedicated or Virtual Private servers. It is on the web hosting service how smartly they manage all their clients.

Due to sharing you have a few downsides too, like:

  • Slightly high latency, but acceptable when compared to the cost.
  • No dedicated resource means by chance if you somehow hit the threshold limit imposed on your shared account, it will be suspended for a short duration.
  • Shared servers are only suitable for small projects with limited traffic.

2. Virtual Private servers (VPS).

Virtual Private servers (in short VPS) are a great way to get the performance and control of a dedicated server without the cost. It offers a flexible, secure, and reliable hosting solution for businesses of all sizes. With VPSs, you can customize your hosting environment to meet your specific needs and manage multiple websites from one server.

You can also take advantage of advanced features such as load balancing, scalability, and increased security; these features may cost you additional fees.

Virtual Private servers are ideal for businesses that need more control over their hosting environment but don’t need the full power of a dedicated server.

VPS is made from dedicated servers, web hosting companies use vitalization software and tools to make this. You’ll be given a virtual account in it with promised resources.

It also have neighbors but their activities will not affect the performance of your VPS and you will always be safe with virtually allocated resources.

If you are planning for something big but small today then it is good to start from VPS.

3. Dedicated servers.

Dedicated servers provide businesses with a secure and reliable hosting solution.

They are designed to host a single user or organization, allowing them to customize the server environment to meet their exact needs.

Dedicated servers offer many advantages over shared and virtual private hosting solutions, such as increased performance and security. With dedicated servers, businesses can enjoy greater control over their data and applications, as well as the ability to scale up or down according to their changing needs. This makes them an ideal choice for companies that need more power and control than shared hosting can provide.

A dedicated hosting server is the ultimate server where nothing is divided or nothing is shared. You’ll have a complete access to servers.

Dedicated Servers enjoys ultimate power of processing things fast and it is used when you are in big business where hundreds and thousand of clients are working online.

4. Cloud servers.

Cloud servers have become a popular solution for businesses that need reliable and cost-efficient hosting solutions. With cloud servers, businesses can access the computing power of multiple physical servers in a virtual environment. This allows them to scale up or down as needed, eliminating the need for expensive hardware investments.

Cloud servers also provide businesses with greater flexibility, allowing them to rapidly respond to changing customer demands while reducing their IT costs.

With cloud servers, companies can also benefit from improved security and reliability since they are hosted in secure data centers with redundant backups and 24/7 monitoring.

By leveraging the power of the cloud, businesses can ensure that their websites remain available and secure at all times.

5. Hardware optimized servers.

Now a days hardware optimized servers are in trend due to variety of studies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and similar new things.

You’ll find CPU optimized, Memory optimized, even GPU optimized web servers. The cost of hardware optimized servers are high as they concentrate on single resources more.

6. Content delivery network.

Content delivery networks (CDNs) are an essential part of the modern web, it is different from any of common web hosting servers. It is more like extension to common web hosting where you’ll offload all the static contents and resources to a network computers spread across world. They help to reduce latency, improve performance, and make content easily accessible to users around the world.

For example: A website that serves images or videos will need a CDN so their main server doesn’t get impacted by heavy traffic they receive. This will save their bandwidth of main server where actual site is hosted and avoid and sudden traffic blast.

CDNs are used by businesses of all sizes to ensure that their websites and applications are always up and running. They also provide a secure way to deliver content that is protected from cyber threats. By leveraging CDNs, businesses can deliver content faster, more reliably, and with greater security than ever before.

These are about web hosting servers and its type, but this is not the end because there are still so many things after dedicated server which is still used.

I use Debian Linux with NGINX web server software and have implemented FastCGI Cache. Technically I’m not using any caching plugin.
