Highly recommended productivity tips for writers

Minus writer’s block (which blocks writer productivity), writing can be a fun activity. As a career, however, writing or blogging can sometimes seem demanding especially when you have a ton of writing to do. This can affect quality and productivity.

With millions of content written and published daily and a seemingly growing demand for more quality content, writers and bloggers are pressed to impress. This can make 24 hours feel like a couple of hours, which isn’t enough to produce quality content.

For some writers, outsourcing their work is a no-no, they have to do it all by themselves. For those who try to outsource, they may either find it expensive or hard to get good writers who can deliver on time and on point; so again they have to do it themselves.

Whatever your case, I’ll be  sharing tips in this article to help you become more productive as a writer/blogger and increase both your word count and client/reader satisfaction but first here are

Some factors that inhibit writers productivity.

  • Writer’s block
  • Low pay/income
  • Too much work
  • Tight deadlines
  • Fatigue and burnout
  • Stress
  • Sickness
  • Distractions, among others

To get around these bottlenecks, here are:

7 highly recommended productivity tips for bloggers and writers.

1.  Start a morning routine.

Establishing the right morning routine can set you off to a great start and provide sufficient strength and motivation for the rest of the day, helping you reach all or most of your daily writing goals.

A morning routine consists of a set of activities or practices done every morning until it becomes a habit. The perfect morning routine is created by you for yourself. It can also be found through experimentation and practice.

For writers and bloggers a great morning routine can include:

  • Going to bed early
  • Waking up early
  • Meditation/prayers
  • Workout
  • Cold bath
  • Breakfast
  • Educational games

There are many more things you can include in your morning routine or ideas you can try out until you find the perfect fit to which you can commit.

2. Stay motivated.

Speaking about motivation, we all need a little motivation every now and then. Unlike self-medication, self-motivation is a great way to maintain your productivity levels as a writer/blogger.

Interestingly, motivational words are often written by fellow writers, professional or not. Reading and listening to motivational and inspirational speeches by writers for writers is awesome because they can better address issues facing you as a writer.

You can get such motivational words by following popular writers on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc or by joining dedicated writers groups where they provide group support and encouragement

3. Read, research.

Garbage in, garbage out. With writing output is directly related to the input. Therefore, the more writers read the more they can and want to write. To be an effective writer you need to read, widely and deeply too.

These days there are tons of blogs and resources out there that contain information that can enrich writers and their writing. Buzzsumo is a great place to find articles with the most social shares.

Find, read and follow top blogs or magazines in your niche or area of interest. That way you get current information plus trending news that can spice up your writing.

4. Plan/outline.

Following a plan or outline makes achieving your writing goals easier. You may have ideas in your head but without something on paper, your ideas may not translate nicely.

Whether you’re using paper, chalk or an app, a detailed outline will make it easier to approach your writing tasks. A 10,000 words assignment will look like 1,000,000 words without an outline, and like 1,000 words with a solid outline.

A good outline can contain:

  • Introduction
  • Opening quotes
  • Definition
  • Statistics
  • What?
  • Why?
  • When?
  • How?
  • Charts
  • Graphics
  • Summary
  • Conclusion

5. Just write.

Sometimes even with a good outline, writers may still not feel like writing. It takes a lot of discipline to write. Combined with writer’s block, writing can begin to feel like a chore.

To overcome this inertia successful writers will tell you to just write. After all, the only way to start a thing is to start it anyway. As you go along writing the more you’ll feel like writing.

It’s best to not sit and wait for inspiration. To become a productive writer you’ll need to create your own inspiration. Writing daily is a great way to exercise your writing muscles and build stamina for the dry days.

6. Take a break.

On the surface, taking a break might seem to counter-intuitive especially when you’re beginning to flow after a dry spell, but still, you should take a break after writing for a while to rest your arm and reset your brain and mind.

It is even more important to take a break when you’re having a real struggle overcoming your writer’s block which can be worsened by depression, sickness or bereavement. You may instead try to write a poem or update your journal to reflect on how you really feel at the moment.

You can take a walk, play fun games, chit chat with family and friends, play relaxing music, take a bath, swim, nap or indulge in whatever makes you relax and refresh.

7. Finish up.

After a while, you’ll need to take a break from your break too and get back to work. If you take an extended break you could miss deadlines and put yourself under undue stress to meet up, which can result in crappy writing. Plus you may totally lose interest in completing the job.

Finishing a task and seeing it crossed off your to-do list is a real kicker and puts you in the mood to want to start and finish the next task. So, finishing every writing assignment is great for productivity in the long run.

And of course, finishing every writing assignment means even more assignments can be sent your way which also translates into more income for you; a great motivator indeed.

Conclusion.

Taking these steps will up your chances of succeeding as a writer/blogger and being productive too. So remember to always:

  • Stick to your morning routine
  • Stay motivated
  • Read, research
  • Plan, outline
  • Just write
  • Take a break
  • Finish up
